Prince Andrew has announced that he will cease using his titles and honours, including the Duke of York, following ongoing controversies related to the Epstein scandal. This decision comes just days before the release of a memoir by Virginia Giuffre, who has accused Andrew of sexual assault and received a substantial settlement from him in a civil case.

In a statement issued by Buckingham Palace, Andrew revealed that discussions with King Charles III and his family led to the conclusion that “the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the royal family.” While Andrew will retain his status as a prince, he emphasized his commitment to prioritizing his family’s duties.

“I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first,” Andrew stated. He reiterated his previous decision to withdraw from public life, which he made five years ago. “With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me.”

Although Andrew will retain the dukedom, which can only be revoked through an Act of Parliament, he will no longer actively use it. He will also relinquish his knighthood as a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order and his role as a Royal Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.

The decision to abandon his titles reflects a significant shift in Andrew’s public standing, particularly in light of the ongoing scrutiny surrounding his past. He previously paid $12 million to Giuffre to settle the civil case without admitting any wrongdoing. The forthcoming memoir is expected to delve into Giuffre’s experiences, further reigniting discussions around the allegations against Andrew.

This latest development marks another chapter in a saga that has drawn considerable media attention and public outrage since the Epstein scandal came to light. Andrew’s decision to step back from his titles may be viewed as an attempt to distance himself from past controversies while navigating the complex dynamics of royal duties and public perception.
