Catherine Connolly’s sister, Dr. Margaret Connolly, has publicly defended the president-elect against what she called “awful smears” during the election campaign. Speaking on Ocean FM on March 7, 2025, Dr. Connolly praised her sister’s election victory as “historic, beautiful, and a dream come true.” Catherine Connolly secured over 914,000 votes, representing a significant 63.3 percent of the total valid poll.

Dr. Connolly expressed her pride in her sister’s achievement, emphasizing that the electorate had not been deterred by false claims against the Independent candidate. “One million people have endorsed the truth,” she stated, highlighting the overwhelming support for Catherine Connolly. She further asserted, “If she’s a commie and a loony, I am very glad to be in her camp. I am proud that Catherine will speak the truth.”

Reflecting on Family and Values

Catherine Connolly grew up in Shantalla, a notable council estate in Galway, as one of 14 children. Her mother passed away in 1966 at the age of 43, when Catherine was just nine years old. Dr. Connolly shared that perseverance, love, and compassion—values instilled by their parents—would guide her sister’s presidency. She remarked, “These are Christian values, and I believe will define her presidency.” Notably, Dr. Connolly commented, “Jesus was probably the first socialist,” emphasizing her sister’s progressive ideals.

During her victory speech at Dublin Castle, Catherine Connolly pledged to be “a president for all.” Dr. Connolly expressed confidence in her sister’s commitment to this promise. “I think absolutely she will rise to be a president for all,” she affirmed.

Family Support and Political Influence

Last year, Dr. Margaret Connolly married her long-term partner, Declan Bree, the former mayor of Sligo, in a historic ceremony at City Hall in Sligo. This wedding marked the first event held at the venue since its opening in 1865. In light of Catherine Connolly’s election, Bree praised the efforts of her sisters, stating they “didn’t leave a stone unturned” in their campaigning.

Catherine Connolly’s impressive victory included winning 63.46 percent of the vote in the Sligo-Leitrim constituency. Bree remarked that her election signifies the beginning of a movement for an alternative Ireland.

The Connolly family’s strong bond and shared values appear to have played a significant role in shaping Catherine’s political journey. As she takes on her new responsibilities, her supporters look forward to her leadership style and commitment to inclusivity in governance.
