University of Galway Unveils Innovative Medical Device Hub
The University of Galway has officially launched its new Medical Device Prototype Hub, a significant development supported by the global medical device company Medtronic. This initiative is part of a five-year, €5 million innovation partnership announced in 2023, focusing on enhancing the MedTech ecosystem, fostering STEM engagement, and promoting research.
Strengthening Innovation in Galway
Professor David Burn, President of the University of Galway, emphasized that the launch marks a pivotal moment in the university’s collaboration with Medtronic. He stated, “This also sends a strong message to all those in the sector and all those who are driving innovation – University of Galway is creating the ecosystem in which our partners in research and innovation can thrive.” He expressed optimism about the breakthroughs this initiative will facilitate.
The Medical Device Prototype Hub is integrated within the Institute for Health Discovery and Innovation, established at the university in 2024 as part of the ongoing partnership with Medtronic. The hub will also receive backing from collaborations with government agencies and industry leaders, creating a robust environment for technological advancement.
Comprehensive Support for Medical Innovation
Ronan Rogers, Senior R&D Director at Medtronic, highlighted the company’s longstanding ties to the west of Ireland, noting that the facility reinforces their commitment to advancing research and innovation. He remarked, “We are proud to invest in an ecosystem that not only drives technological progress but also supports talent development.” The hub aims to expedite the journey from innovative concepts to tangible medical solutions for patients.
The new hub will enhance the university’s Technology Services Directorate, which aims to provide shared research infrastructure and technical expertise for both the Institute for Health Discovery and Innovation and the Institute for Clinical Trials. Aoife Duffy, Director of the Technology Services Directorate, stated, “This service aims to advance our research excellence by bringing together state-of-the-art core facilities and making strategic decisions on infrastructure and investment.”
The Medical Device Prototype Hub is designed to facilitate the creation, development, and manufacturing of innovative medical device prototypes. The expert team will offer a comprehensive range of services to support early-stage medical device innovation, including both virtual and physical prototyping. Rapid design iteration will be enabled through Computer Aided Design, modeling, and simulation.
Equipped with cutting-edge additive manufacturing technologies, the hub provides a full-service, one-stop solution for 3D printing needs. This includes expert-led design, printing, and consultancy, ensuring that researchers have access to the necessary resources to validate and refine their prototypes.
As the University of Galway continues to establish itself as a key player in Ireland’s global MedTech hub, the Medical Device Prototype Hub stands as a testament to its commitment to fostering innovation and research for the public good.
