Hull KR Secures Grand Final Victory, Joins Super League Elite
Hull Kingston Rovers (Hull KR) has made a significant mark in rugby league by claiming victory in the 2025 Super League Grand Final, thereby securing their status among the sport’s elite. The team’s 24-6 win over the Wigan Warriors not only ended Wigan’s bid for a third consecutive Grand Final title but also solidified Hull KR’s place as a formidable force in the league.
The Super League has long been dominated by a small group of clubs. Historically, four teams—Wigan Warriors, St Helens, Leeds Rhinos, and the Bradford Bulls—have shared the spotlight, with the latter not having competed in the top flight for over a decade. As a result, the emergence of Hull KR as a new champion marks a notable shift in the competition. For the past 21 years, the Grand Final trophy had consistently gone to these established teams, making Hull KR’s triumph a refreshing change.
In the lead-up to the Grand Final, Hull KR had already secured the League Leaders’ Shield and the Challenge Cup, demonstrating their prowess throughout the season. Despite this, Wigan entered the match as the favourite, drawing on their extensive experience. Yet, Hull KR defied expectations in front of a packed crowd, showcasing their determination and skill.
Historic Achievement for Hull KR
This victory not only represents a momentous achievement for Hull KR, but it also places them in the exclusive company of clubs that have completed a treble of major titles. Only three other teams—Bradford Bulls in 2003, St Helens in 2006, and Leeds Rhinos in 2015—have accomplished this feat in the league’s history.
Owner Neil Hudgell expressed his pride in the team’s achievements, stating, “There’s been a lot of lows. But three times this year after nothing for 40 years… It’s testament to Willie [Peters] and the group.” His comments highlight the resilience and dedication displayed by the team after experiencing significant setbacks, including relegation to the Championship in 2016.
The victory also signifies a turning point for Hull KR, transforming them from challengers to giants in rugby league. The team has faced numerous disappointments over the years, with many clubs, including Hull FC and Warrington Wolves, attempting to rise to the top without success. Hull KR’s triumph sets a new standard, as they now shift the narrative from simply being a contender to establishing themselves as a powerhouse in the sport.
Looking Ahead
As Hull KR celebrates its historic win, the focus now turns to the future. The team must build on this momentum and continue to solidify its position among the league’s elite. The question now is not whether they have joined the ranks of the big boys, but how they can maintain their status and compete at the highest levels.
With their recent successes, Hull KR fans are filled with hope and anticipation for what lies ahead. The achievement serves as a reminder that in sports, perseverance and hard work can lead to remarkable outcomes, even against the odds. As the club moves forward, the challenge will be to ensure that they remain competitive and continue to inspire the next generation of players and supporters.
