UPDATE: The world premiere of Theocracy, a powerful documentary on the life of London-Irish artist Bernard Canavan, is set to take place at the Cork International Film Festival on November 10, 2023. This urgent film, directed by Sé Merry Doyle, explores Canavan’s harrowing childhood and his journey as an artist, shining a light on the struggles of Irish emigrants.

In an exclusive statement to The Irish World, Doyle expressed his excitement: “I am very much looking forward to it… It was such a long journey, so hard to make because we had no funding except for the good people of London.” The film’s budget of £9,000 was largely funded through community support during two preview screenings in Hammersmith.

The documentary chronicles Canavan’s tumultuous beginnings, detailing how he was taken from his biological parents immediately after birth and placed in St. Patrick’s Guild, an orphanage in Dublin. Neglected for over three years, Canavan was eventually adopted by a woman who provided him with a nurturing environment, enabling him to flourish as an artist and advocate. “Mrs. Canavan saved my life,” he stated, emphasizing his gratitude for the opportunity to escape the orphanage’s grim conditions.

Canavan’s artistic works, particularly his paintings reflecting the experiences of Irish emigrants, have gained international acclaim. His latest series, Theocracy, tackles the Catholic Church’s oppressive grip on Irish society, aiming to give voice to countless victims of its abuses. “I think people have been inundated with all the horrors… But because Bernard became so educated himself, he really knows how to tell that story,” Doyle remarked.

The film also features a poignant scene where Canavan revisits the orphanage, now referred to as “The House of Shame.” This emotional return underscores the film’s themes of survival and resilience. Canavan’s journey resonates deeply with audiences, depicting the struggles of those who left Ireland in search of better lives, often starting with nothing.

Prominent figures, including former President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins, who makes a cameo in the documentary, will be attending the premiere. Doyle noted the significance of the screening aligning with Higgins’ last day in office, highlighting the importance of the emigrant narrative that Canavan so vividly portrays.

“The immensity of the immigrants that left… they rose over time,” Doyle reflected, stressing the importance of sharing these stories with a wider audience. As the documentary prepares for its premiere, anticipation builds around the powerful imagery and emotional storytelling that Canavan brings to the screen.

Following its debut in Cork, Theocracy: The Emigrant’s Artist is set to screen in London and throughout the UK in 2026. For more information and to secure tickets, visit the Cork International Film Festival’s official site.

This compelling documentary not only showcases Canavan’s life but also serves as a vital commentary on the historical injustices faced by many. It stands as a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of sharing these stories with future generations.
