UPDATE: A woman from Buncrana, Caroline Forshaw, has been banned from driving for three years after crashing her van while almost six times over the legal alcohol limit. The incident occurred at Stragill Beach on May 15, 2025, highlighting the dangers of impaired driving.

During her court appearance today, Forshaw, aged 39, pleaded guilty to drink driving charges. A number of other charges against her were dropped due to her early admission of guilt. Sergeant Conor Mulkerns presented compelling evidence, describing Forshaw as “visibly intoxicated” when officers arrived at the scene following a traffic collision report.

Authorities confirmed they found a black Peugeot Partner, registered 212-DL, involved in a minor crash at the beach. Upon arrival, officers identified Forshaw, who admitted to driving the vehicle. A breathalyzer test at Buncrana Garda Station revealed a staggering reading of 124 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath—far exceeding the legal limit of 22 microgrammes.

Defence solicitor Ciaran MacLochlainn described Forshaw’s circumstances, noting she is unemployed and currently on a jobseeker’s allowance of €244 per week while caring for her father. He explained that Forshaw and a friend had driven to the beach, mistakenly believing it was safe to do so. “Unfortunately, she collided with the fence,” MacLochlainn said, adding that the farmer involved was understanding about the situation.

Judge Ciaran Liddy acknowledged Forshaw’s early guilty plea but imposed a mandatory three-year driving disqualification due to the severity of her breath-alcohol reading. In addition, he imposed a fine of €100, with a six-month period to pay, while striking out several other minor charges.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of responsible driving. With the rise in alcohol-related incidents, local authorities urge communities to remain vigilant and prioritize safety.

As Forshaw faces the consequences of her actions, the case highlights the urgent need for public awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving. Stay tuned for further developments on this story.
