Carrick-on-Shannon Celebrates Historic Tidy Towns Award Victory
UPDATE: Residents of Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim, are celebrating as their town has just been awarded the prestigious title of Ireland’s tidiest town. The announcement was made on September 29, 2023, during a ceremony at Croke Park, where Dara Calleary, the Minister for Rural and Community Development, presented the award to local representatives.
The SuperValu TidyTowns Competition, which has been celebrating Ireland’s commitment to beautification and community spirit since 1991, saw an unprecedented 929 towns enter this year, with over 30,000 volunteers participating nationwide. This marks a record number of entries in the competition’s history, highlighting the growing dedication to community improvement across the country.
Minister Calleary declared Carrick-on-Shannon the overall winner, describing the moment as a “special moment of immense pride for Carrick-on-Shannon and indeed the wider county of Leitrim.” The excitement was palpable as locals lined the streets in inclement weather to welcome home their award, showcasing a strong sense of community spirit.
The award was escorted through the town by An Garda Síochána, emphasizing the significance of this achievement. Local leaders also took part in the festivities, with Councillor Gary Prior, Leas Cathaoirleach of Leitrim County Council, welcoming the Tidy Towns Committee back home following their triumphant win.
As residents celebrated, the atmosphere was filled with joy and pride, marking a significant milestone for the town. The community’s hard work and dedication have not only garnered recognition but also inspire other towns to strive for excellence in their own Tidy Towns efforts.
This remarkable achievement serves as a reminder of the power of community involvement and the importance of environmental stewardship. As Carrick-on-Shannon basks in its well-deserved glory, all eyes will be on how the town plans to maintain its title and inspire future generations to continue this important work.
