Daniel O’Donnell Surprises at Historic Red Hugh O’Donnell Parade
UPDATE: Daniel O’Donnell electrified the crowd with a surprise performance at the annual Red Hugh O’Donnell birthday celebrations in Lifford yesterday, marking a historic moment for the event. This year’s parade, held on July 15, 2025, was especially significant as it united various Irish clans for the first time in over 450 years, according to Eddie Crawford, Chairman of the Red Hugh O’Donnell Association.
The celebration drew an enthusiastic crowd as members of the Red Hugh O’Donnell Association marched alongside representatives from the O’Donnells, Sweeneys, Gallaghers, Maguires, and O’Neills. This gathering not only honored Red Hugh’s legacy but also showcased the rich cultural heritage shared among these families.
The parade culminated at the Donegal County Council headquarters, the historic administrative center of County Donegal, where O’Donnell took to the stage. The beloved singer, known for his warmth and timeless voice, captivated attendees, bringing joy and nostalgia to the day. He was joined by local entertainer Jim Farmer Harte, whose infectious energy further enlivened the festivities.
Prominent figures in attendance included Cllr Paul Canning, Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council; Cllr Ruairí McHugh, Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council; and Mr. John McLoughlin, CEO of Donegal County Council. Their presence underscored the event’s significance within the community.
The parade featured vibrant performances from talented local bands, including the Rannafast and Dungloe Junior Bands from the Rosses area, as well as the Murlog School Band, which reunited for this momentous occasion after many years.
The Red Hugh O’Donnell Association expressed heartfelt gratitude to all sponsors, including Donegal County Council, Lifford Credit Union, and Jim Farmer Harte Music, whose support made the celebrations possible. Their community spirit ensured a successful and vibrant homage to Irish history and heritage.
Crawford also highlighted the ongoing collaboration with the Hispano-Irish Association, led by its President, Carlos Burgos. Together, they aim to promote the enduring legacy of Red Hugh O’Donnell as one of Ireland’s most inspirational chieftains worldwide.
