URGENT UPDATE: A Donegal farmer has just been awarded the prestigious Farming for Nature ambassador award for his outstanding commitment to environmentally-friendly farming practices. Seanie O’Baoill, from Falcarragh, is recognized as one of twelve new ambassadors dedicated to protecting nature through sustainable agriculture.

O’Baoill operates 80 hectares of rugged landscape, which includes both the mainland and Tory Island. He primarily farms 150 Mayo and Connemara ewes along with 8 Belted Galloway cows. His innovative farming techniques include eliminating reseeding and fertilizing, allowing the natural landscape to thrive.

Significantly, O’Baoill has taken steps to preserve the unique biodiversity of his farm. He allows many sheep to lamb in the mountains instead of bringing them down, and he has committed to protecting native woodlands along the river. Additionally, he constructed a 3/4 acre man-made pond in 2014, now a habitat for local beehives.

O’Baoill’s contributions to the Corncrake LIFE project have been transformative, resulting in a remarkable 35% increase in the local Corncrake bird population. His nomination for the Farming for Nature ambassador award came from a panel composed of agri-environmental organizations and government bodies, recognizing his dedication to biodiversity and community.

“Wanting to leave the land in a better place for the next generation was a common theme among this year’s nominees,” stated Sarah Coonan, spokesperson for Farming for Nature. She emphasized the urgent need for climate change preparations to ensure the future of Irish farming.

O’Baoill joins fellow Donegal ambassadors, including Cathal Mooney, Boyd Bryce, Henry O’Donnell, and James Breslin, as part of a growing network of 115 farmers recognized for their efforts in promoting nature conservation. Each ambassador was selected after thorough interviews and farm assessments conducted by the Executive Committee of Farming for Nature.

This recognition not only highlights O’Baoill’s individual achievements but also underscores the collective commitment of farmers across Ireland to sustainable practices. As the climate crisis looms, initiatives like this remind us that immediate action is vital for preserving our natural environment for future generations.

Stay tuned for more updates on how farmers like Seanie O’Baoill are reshaping agriculture and promoting biodiversity.
