Gardaí Investigate Cigarette Theft in Galway Service Station

An investigation is underway following a burglary at a service station on Dublin Road in Athenry, County Galway. The incident occurred in the early hours of August 13, 2025, around 02:00 local time. Gardaí responded to reports of the theft, which involved a significant quantity of cigarettes being taken from the premises.
Gardaí confirmed that they arrived promptly at the scene to secure the area for a technical examination. A spokesperson indicated that a “quantity of cigarettes are believed to have been taken,” and that inquiries are ongoing. The investigation reflects a growing concern regarding thefts from local businesses in the area.
In a separate incident, Gardaí also disrupted a suspected robbery in Dublin. A man, armed with a knife and an imitation firearm, was apprehended on Talbot Street on the evening of August 12, 2025. Officers noticed the suspect behaving suspiciously before he entered an off-licence. Upon confrontation, he discarded the weapons and was detained.
A Garda source indicated that the individual, known to officers for previous violent behavior, was likely preparing to commit a robbery. The suspect, a man in his 30s from Dublin, has a criminal history that includes theft and breaches of the peace, along with multiple prison sentences.
Following his arrest, he was found in possession of a small quantity of drugs. He remains in Garda custody for questioning, with a maximum holding period of 24 hours, excluding breaks for meals and sleep. Investigators will continue to coordinate with the Director of Public Prosecutions to determine whether the suspect will be charged or released.
Gardaí are urging anyone with information regarding the burglary in Athenry or the attempted robbery in Dublin to come forward as investigations progress. The increase in these crimes raises significant concerns about public safety and the security of local businesses.
