Irish Activists’ Flotilla Struck by Suspected Israeli Drone Attack

BREAKING: A flotilla carrying Irish activists, part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, was struck by a suspected Israeli drone less than 24 hours after another vessel in the convoy faced a similar attack. The ship, named Alma, was targeted while docked in Tunisian waters as it heads towards Gaza to establish a humanitarian corridor.
Onboard the Alma are activists Tadhg Hickey, Fra Hughes, and Tara Reynor O’Grady. Hickey, a comedian and activist, was the only Irish citizen present during the attack and had just finished his night watch shift when the drone strike occurred. Following the incident, Hickey urgently called for public support via social media, stating, “Support us. Raise the alarm. Raise awareness. But make sure you keep focus on Palestine as well. Whatever happens to us here, we are not the story. Palestine is the story.”
The activists released a statement condemning the attack and appealing to the Irish Government to intervene. They demanded a public statement ensuring the safe passage of their flotilla to Gaza, emphasizing the need for a humanitarian corridor. They highlighted the Irish government’s responsibility under international law to protect its citizens, asserting, “Attacks on Irish citizens or any of the flotilla’s vessels and the forced starvation of the people of Gaza are all breaches of international law.”
This alarming development has escalated tensions in the region, raising questions about the safety of humanitarian missions aimed at aiding Gaza. The flotilla departed from Barcelona last week and has faced multiple threats since its journey began.
As the situation unfolds, the activists continue to call for immediate action from the international community, urging for greater awareness and support for their cause. The urgency of their plea resonates amid ongoing conflicts in the region, drawing attention to the humanitarian crisis facing the people of Gaza.
What happens next remains uncertain. Activists are urging the public to follow developments closely and advocate for humanitarian principles to prevail. The world watches as the Irish Government faces pressure to respond decisively to protect its citizens and uphold international law.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story and share to raise awareness about the plight of those in Gaza.
