Irish Author Naoise Dolan Reveals Harrowing Israeli Detention

URGENT UPDATE: Irish author Naoise Dolan has recounted her terrifying experience in Israeli detention following her interception by Israeli forces on a humanitarian flotilla on October 8. Dolan’s account sheds light on the harsh conditions faced by detainees, emphasizing the urgent need for awareness around the ongoing situation in Gaza.
Upon her return to Ireland, Dolan expressed her shock at the conditions she witnessed, stating, “The two things that saddened and horrified me the most were the giant Israeli flag on the wall opposite our cell and a massive poster showing a road in Gaza reduced to rubble, captioned in Arabic as ‘the new Gaza.’” Her vivid description underscores the emotional and psychological toll of her experience.
Dolan also highlighted the alarming presence of a playground for children within the Israeli immigration prison, noting it had barbed wire on the ceiling. She described the brutality of the guards, stating, “They beat people, they gave people black eyes, and pulled people by their hair.” The author’s claims about the guards’ treatment of detainees paint a grim picture of life behind bars, with constant yelling and interruptions disrupting sleep.
“I have a few bruises. I got shoved around a bit. My cable ties were tied around too tightly, and I lost circulation in my hands; it was quite scary,” Dolan recounted, emphasizing the physical and emotional distress she endured. She warned that this was merely a glimpse of the situation, stating, “This is them on their best behaviour. This is them remembering there’s international media attention.”
This incident follows the detention of other humanitarian workers, including Senator Chris Andrews and TD Barry Heneghan, who were also attempting to deliver aid to Gaza. Their shared experiences highlight the broader issues surrounding the treatment of aid workers and detainees in the region.
Dolan, known for her bestselling novels Exciting Times and The Happy Couple, aims to use her platform to bring attention to the plight of Palestinians still imprisoned in Israel. Her powerful testimony serves as a call to action for global audiences to remain aware of the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
This developing story raises critical questions about the treatment of detainees in conflict zones and the impact on those seeking to provide humanitarian aid. As more voices join the conversation, the urgency for international attention and action grows.
For updates on this situation and more details from Dolan’s account, stay tuned as we continue to follow this story.
