Jimmy Kimmel’s Irish Holiday Highlights Election Contrast with US
During a recent family holiday in Ireland, US television host Jimmy Kimmel humorously highlighted the stark contrast between the Irish presidential election and the political climate in the United States. Kimmel, who took a break from his show Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC, vacationed with his extended family, including his children and parents, in Co Mayo, where he explored his ancestral roots.
In the opening monologue of his show on October 3, 2023, Kimmel recounted his experiences in Ireland and remarked on the presidential election taking place during his visit. “We were there during their presidential election and no one seemed terrified,” he said, contrasting the calm atmosphere with the often fraught political tensions in the US.
Kimmel’s Observations on Election and Community Spirit
Kimmel shared a moment from the Irish election that stood out to him. He displayed a photograph of candidates Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys shaking hands during a debate. He noted, “What about this photograph feels different to you? Two women, yes, that’s a big one, but also they’re sharing a warm embrace.” Connolly’s eventual victory was marked by her opponent’s gracious concession, stating, “Catherine will be a president for all of us, and she will be my president.” Kimmel contrasted this with the divisive rhetoric often seen in US politics, particularly referencing Donald Trump‘s claims about the 2020 election being “rigged.”
While in Ireland, Kimmel encountered nothing but kindness from the locals. He recalled a heartwarming incident where his niece left her purse in a pub, and a stranger went out of her way to return it to their hotel, refusing any form of compensation. “They don’t know that we have more of a hostage-type situation,” Kimmel joked, drawing laughter from his audience.
Throughout his trip, Kimmel engaged with many fans of his show, who expressed concern about the state of American politics. “In case you’re wondering what other countries think about what’s going on here in our country, I’ll tell you – they’re worried about us,” he said, likening it to a family member showing up at a gathering in disarray. He added, “They had a lot of questions I couldn’t answer, like, ‘why is he knocking down the White House?’” This remark was in reference to Trump’s controversial plans to demolish parts of the White House for a new ballroom.
Reflections on Recent Controversies
Kimmel’s trip comes on the heels of a brief suspension of his show due to comments made regarding a recent incident involving conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. The show’s parent company, Disney, stated that Kimmel’s remarks were “ill-timed and thus insensitive,” but after discussions, the show was allowed to resume. Kimmel has since continued to address both light-hearted and pressing political topics on air.
His vacation in Ireland not only provided a backdrop for personal exploration but also served as a springboard for commentary on the differences in political discourse between Ireland and the United States. Kimmel’s reflections resonate with audiences who are navigating a complex political landscape, highlighting the universal desire for civility and connection in public life.
