Kilkenny Mother Fears Year-Long Wait for Daughter’s MRI Scan

UPDATE: A Kilkenny mother is expressing urgent fears for her five-year-old daughter as reports reveal she may face a wait of up to one year for a critical MRI scan. Carolann Walsh’s daughter is suffering from debilitating headaches linked to a recent diagnosis of scoliosis, a condition where the spine curves abnormally.
“I am terrified for her future,” Walsh stated, echoing her own past struggles with the healthcare system. In 2009, she experienced significant delays in receiving spinal surgery, highlighting a disturbing pattern in the treatment of scoliosis patients that persists today.
Walsh revealed that her daughter’s condition is causing persistent headaches, sometimes escalating into severe migraines. The family has been informed that the wait for an MRI, necessary for guiding treatment, could stretch from eight months to a year. “How can it be that nothing has changed after all these years?” she questioned.
The alarming situation in Ireland is underscored by recent data from Children’s Health Ireland (CHI), which shows that as of September 2024, 264 children are on waiting lists for scoliosis surgery. Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill previously warned that the country is “nowhere near” delivering timely care for young scoliosis patients, with widespread backlogs in MRI and other diagnostic tests.
“No child should have to wait in pain,” Walsh emphasized. “If the health service found a way in 2009, it can find a way now.”
According to experts, scoliosis affects around 2-4% of adolescents globally, with severe cases often necessitating bracing or surgical intervention. The delays in obtaining timely scans mean many children are left to suffer, as families face mounting anxiety over their children’s health.
Advocacy groups are calling for immediate reform and increased investment in healthcare services to address these backlogs. Each month of waiting not only prolongs the suffering of these children but also heightens the stakes for families like Walsh’s, where the future mobility and quality of life of their children hang in the balance.
As the healthcare crisis continues, parents are urging authorities to take action before another generation is left behind. Families are not just waiting for medical appointments; they are anxiously counting the days for their children’s futures.
