Letterkenny AC Runners Gear Up for Dublin Marathon, Fundraising Urgently for Donegal Hospice
UPDATE: Nineteen members of the Letterkenny Athletic Club are set to compete in the Dublin Marathon on October 26, 2023, raising funds urgently for the Donegal Hospice. This annual event not only tests the runners’ endurance but also supports vital local charities, with a significant goal of enhancing awareness and funding for community services.
In a heartfelt statement, Letterkenny AC Chairman Raymond Birch emphasized the importance of this tradition. He noted, “For many years, Letterkenny AC marathon runners have done their bit for local charities when competing in the Dublin Marathon. We are always glad to support those in need.” Over the past three years, the club has raised an impressive €20,000 for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association, showcasing their commitment to community welfare.
This year, the spotlight is on the Donegal Hospice, recognized for its essential services in the county. Birch encourages the community to contribute, stating, “We are asking people to consider making a donation through the Go Fund Me page which was set up at the weekend.” The page aims to garner substantial support to aid the hospice’s mission.
The runners have been in intensive training, particularly following recent successes in local competitions, including the Donegal novice and senior cross-country championships. Birch expressed confidence in their preparations, despite some injuries that have affected a few participants. “We will have a total of 19 runners on the start line on Sunday week. They have all trained well and are on the wind down now after many months of preparation,” he said.
Participants include local athletes such as Ciaran McGonigle, Caroline McGonagle, Stephen McAuley, and many others, all eager to tackle the challenging 26.2-mile course through Dublin’s streets. Birch extended his best wishes to the team, highlighting the personal and collective effort behind this endeavor.
To support the runners and the Donegal Hospice, donations can be made at the Go Fund Me page: https://gofund.me/1d1857bc2.
As the marathon approaches, the sense of community and purpose grows stronger. The Letterkenny Athletic Club exemplifies how sports can unite individuals for a greater cause, making a positive impact in the lives of those who need it most. Stay tuned for updates as race day draws near.
