Minister Announces €847,820 Funding for 36 Science Week Projects

UPDATE: €847,820 in funding has just been announced for 36 projects across Ireland as part of Science Week 2025, running from November 9 to 16. Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation & Science, James Lawless, unveiled the funding today, emphasizing the importance of science in daily life.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of Science Week, coordinated by Research Ireland. The theme, “Then. Today. Tomorrow.”, encourages citizens to reflect on how science has impacted their lives and to consider future challenges. Lawless stated, “Science shapes every minute of our daily lives, from protecting the environment to driving healthcare and technological innovation.”
The excitement is palpable as Science Week prepares for 14 festivals and hundreds of events nationwide. Events will engage communities in the exploration of scientific progress and its implications for the future. Lawless urged everyone to participate, saying, “I encourage everyone to get involved and attend one of the many events happening around the country this Science Week.”
Highlighting this year’s festivities is the stunning Museum of the Moon, created by artist Luke Jerram, which will be on display in Dublin’s Merrion Square from November 13 to 15. This seven-meter diameter installation features breathtaking imagery of the lunar surface and promises a thought-provoking experience for attendees. The event is free and opens to the public on Thursday, November 13.
Additionally, the renowned spectacle theatre company Macnas will debut in Cork at the Marina Market on November 9. Their performance will address the critical issue of biodiversity loss through a captivating story about the endangered corncrake, an emblematic bird in Ireland. This poignant reminder of environmental urgency will include a follow-up installation that remains on site until November 13.
Dr. Ruth Freeman, Director of Research for Society at Research Ireland, expressed her enthusiasm for the anniversary, stating, “For 30 years, Science Week has been sparking curiosity and bringing people together through science.” She commended local organizers and volunteers for their dedication, making Science Week a vibrant celebration connecting communities across Ireland.
With €847,820 allocated for diverse projects, this year’s Science Week is set to inspire and educate like never before. Events are designed to spark curiosity, engage communities, and highlight the transformative power of science in shaping our future.
