UPDATE: National Heritage Week 2025 has officially kicked off in Limerick, bringing an exciting lineup of events from August 16 to August 24. This year’s celebration promises a vibrant mix of free activities designed for both locals and visitors, including hands-on workshops, nature walks, artistic showcases, and a lively street party.

Tom O’Neill, Heritage Officer for Limerick County Council, emphasized the importance of this week, stating, “National Heritage Week is a chance to reconnect with our landscapes, our stories, and the skills and traditions that continue to shape our county.” The theme for this year, “Exploring Our Foundations,” invites participants to delve into Limerick’s rich history and biodiversity.

The festivities begin early on Saturday, August 16, with a pop-up showcase titled “The Fine Art of Limerick Lace” at Limerick City Library at 10:00 AM. Nature enthusiasts can join a guided walk through Barnagh Tunnel at 11:00 AM. Later that day, the heritage of the Victorian pipe organ will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Parish Church in Doon at 6:30 PM.

On Sunday, August 17, the excitement continues with the “Walls of Limerick” dance in Irishtown at 2:00 PM, followed by an introduction to blacksmithing in Cappamore from August 18 to 21. This series of events is designed to engage the community in cultural heritage, offering something for everyone.

Throughout the week, attendees can enjoy various activities, including a guided tour of the Foynes Architectural Conservation Area & Flying Boat Museum on Monday, August 18, and an art class with local artist Kathy Tiernan in Croom on Wednesday, August 20. There’s even a basket weaving demonstration at Croom Civic Centre on Thursday, August 21 at 1:00 PM.

The week wraps up on Friday, August 22, with opportunities to explore family genealogy at the Askeaton Genealogy Centre at 6:00 PM or take part in the Askeaton Ballysteen Natural Heritage River Walk at 6:30 PM.

All events are free of charge, making this an excellent opportunity for families to engage with Limerick’s heritage. O’Neill encourages everyone to participate: “I urge everyone across Limerick to take part, share what you know, and discover something new.”
