New Book Reveals Alleged Affairs of Margaret Thatcher
A new book titled The Incidental Feminist has emerged, claiming that the late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher engaged in two affairs during her 50-year marriage to Denis Thatcher. This revelation comes ahead of what would have been Thatcher’s 100th birthday, adding another layer to the complex narrative of one of the United Kingdom’s most polarizing leaders.
Published last month, the book’s author, Tina Gaudcoin, asserts that Thatcher had relationships outside her marriage, the first allegedly occurring early in her parliamentary career. The second affair reportedly involved Sir Humphrey Atkins, a former Member of Parliament for Spelthorne, who served as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from 1979 to 1981. Atkins, who passed away in 2010, was married with four children at the time.
The book also touches upon Thatcher’s alleged “extra-curricular friendship” with her head of public relations, Lord Bell. While Bell acknowledged hearing rumors about the purported affair, he stated that he found no concrete evidence to substantiate these claims.
The revelations in The Incidental Feminist are not the first to explore Thatcher’s personal life. A series of authorized biographies by Lord Charles Moore, published since 2014, have also examined her legacy. However, Gaudcoin’s narrative adds fresh perspectives on Thatcher’s private relationships, including insights into Denis Thatcher’s unexpected friendship with model and showgirl Mandy Rice-Davies. It has been suggested that Denis Thatcher often corresponded with Rice-Davies, addressing her as “Mandy dear” in his letters.
Margaret Thatcher served as Prime Minister from 1979 until 1990, and her tenure was marked by significant economic and social changes in the UK. She passed away on April 8, 2013, after suffering a stroke, at the age of 87, at the Ritz Hotel in London.
As discussions surrounding the book continue, it raises questions about the intersection of personal life and public duty, particularly for figures in high office. How these revelations will affect Thatcher’s legacy remains to be seen, but they undoubtedly contribute to the ongoing conversation about her impact on British politics and society.
