Sally Rooney Risks Arrest in UK Over Palestine Action Support

UPDATE: Irish author Sally Rooney has been warned she “can no longer safely enter the UK without potentially facing arrest” due to her vocal support for the banned group Palestine Action. This urgent warning comes after the organization was designated as a terror entity in July 2023, following an incident where two Voyager planes were damaged at RAF Brize Norton Air Station on June 20.
Rooney, 34, remains steadfast in her beliefs, stating that she will continue her support for Palestine Action despite the risks. After receiving the Sky Arts Award for literature, Rooney expressed her commitment to “solidarity with the people of Palestine” through a message delivered by her editor during the ceremony held in London.
In her message, Rooney said, “I wish that I could be with you this evening to accept the honour in person, but because of my support for non-violent anti-war protest, I’m advised that I can no longer safely enter the UK without potentially facing arrest.” She further emphasized her belief in the dignity and beauty of all human life.
The situation escalated in August when Downing Street cautioned Rooney about the possibility of committing a terrorist offence after she pledged to donate her earnings from book sales and BBC adaptations to support Palestine Action. This declaration was made in an article for the Irish Times and has drawn significant attention.
Rooney has also backed a legal challenge by Huda Ammori, co-founder of Palestine Action, against the Home Office regarding the decision to classify the group under the Terrorism Act 2000.
The political landscape surrounding Rooney is fraught with tension, as earlier this month, nearly 900 demonstrators were arrested during a rally in central London protesting against the ban on Palestine Action. These events highlight the growing divide and escalating emotions surrounding the issue.
As this situation develops, many are watching closely to see how authorities will respond to Rooney’s ongoing activism and what implications her stance may have for her future engagements in the UK. The international community is divided, with supporters rallying behind her cause while others voice concerns over the potential for legal consequences.
The urgency of this matter cannot be overstated, as Rooney’s actions and the government’s response could set a significant precedent for freedom of speech and activism in the UK and beyond. As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on the implications for both Rooney and Palestine Action.
