€118,000 seized from the proceeds of crime has been earmarked for two significant community projects in Galway City. This funding aims to bolster local services focused on drug and alcohol recovery, as well as support an innovative community initiative.
The bulk of the funding, over €97,000, will enhance drug and alcohol recovery services in Galway City, operated by the Western Region Drug and Alcohol Taskforce. This investment is expected to provide essential resources for individuals battling addiction, promoting recovery and rehabilitation within the community.
Another allocation of €21,000 has been awarded to SCCUL Enterprises in Ballybane. This funding will support the “Canvas for Change” project, which aims to engage the community through artistic expression and social change. The initiative seeks to empower participants and foster a sense of belonging while addressing local issues.
Nationally, more than €4 million has been made available to various organizations dedicated to working with vulnerable populations. This funding initiative reflects a growing commitment to addressing social challenges and enhancing community support systems across Ireland.
Local politician and Galway West Fianna Fáil TD John Connolly expressed approval of the allocation, stating that this funding is a productive use of resources derived from crime. Connolly emphasized the importance of reinvesting such proceeds into initiatives that benefit the community directly.
This funding not only highlights the ongoing efforts to combat crime but also underscores a proactive approach to community support and recovery services in Galway City. With these funds, local organizations can enhance their capacity to serve and uplift those in need, ultimately contributing to a healthier and more resilient community.
