Storm Bram Hits Ireland: Severe Wind Warnings Now in Effect
URGENT UPDATE: Storm Bram is set to unleash severe and destructive weather across Ireland, prompting Met Éireann to issue a Status Orange Wind warning for multiple counties. The warning takes effect from 7 AM to 3 PM and again from 10 AM to 6 PM on December 9, 2023.
Counties under threat include Cork, Kerry, Waterford, Wexford, Clare, Limerick, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, and Sligo. Residents are urged to prepare for powerful southerly winds, which could reach gale force, along with potential flooding and hazardous travel conditions.
Officials have emphasized the urgency of the situation, warning that the storm poses a significant risk to life and property. Gabriel Hynes, A/Director of Services with Waterford City and County Council, stated, “Storm Bram has the potential to be a particularly strong and damaging storm. We urge the public to heed all safety advice and avoid unnecessary travel.”
The consequences of Storm Bram may include fallen trees, debris on roads, and disrupted transport services. Motorists are advised to slow down, increase stopping distances, and remain vigilant for vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists. Authorities stress the importance of avoiding driving through flowing or standing water, as the water’s depth can be deceptive.
Moreover, coastal areas are at risk due to high water levels, with warnings of wave overtopping. The public is strongly advised to stay away from coastal regions, adhering to Irish Coast Guard guidance to “stay back, stay high, and stay dry.”
