Trump Takes Control of Washington as National Guard Deploys

In a significant move, President Donald Trump has begun the deployment of 800 National Guard members to Washington, D.C. This action follows his directive to federal forces to take control of the city’s police department, citing a purported crime emergency. The announcement was made just a day earlier, with Trump characterizing the city as “lawless,” a claim that local officials dispute.
The deployment commenced on the morning of March 15, 2024, after Trump stated he would activate the National Guard to assist in what he described as an urgent need to combat crime. However, city officials emphasize that crime rates are declining, contradicting the president’s assertions. The District of Columbia has historically given the federal government more authority over the area than states have, complicating local governance.
Local Leaders Respond to Federal Control
Mayor Muriel Bowser has publicly committed to collaborating with the federal officials overseeing law enforcement. She emphasized that the chief of police would retain command of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) despite the federal intervention. Bowser remarked, “How we got here or what we think about the circumstances – right now we have more police, and we want to make sure we use them.”
This statement marked a noticeable shift in tone from Bowser’s previous comments, where she criticized Trump’s plan as counterproductive. She pointed out that the emergency declared by the president did not align with the reality of decreasing crime statistics in Washington. For context, violent crime in the city has reportedly reached a 30-year low, with incidents of carjacking falling by approximately 50% in 2024.
Bowser’s administration faces limitations in pushing back against federal authority. She noted, “Our ability to push back is limited,” given the legal framework governing the District of Columbia.
Trump’s Tough-on-Crime Agenda
Attorney General Pam Bondi described a recent meeting with city officials as productive, asserting that the Justice Department would work closely with local leaders to enhance safety in Washington, D.C. As Trump frames his plan with the slogan “we’re going to take our capital back,” Bowser and MPD officials maintain that the overall trend in crime is decreasing.
Throughout his presidency, Trump has adopted a tough-on-crime stance, often declaring states of emergency on various issues. His latest actions in Washington reflect a continuation of this approach, as he leverages the unique status of the District of Columbia to advance his law enforcement agenda. Despite asserting the need to address crime, Trump has not outlined specific strategies to tackle underlying issues such as homelessness.
The dynamics between Bowser and Trump have evolved over the years, with the mayor previously opposing Trump’s military parade plans and resisting federal interventions during the summer protests in 2020. Their relationship has been characterized by tension, particularly as Bowser took steps to promote social justice initiatives, such as painting “Black Lives Matter” in large letters near the White House.
As the deployment of National Guard troops unfolds, the ongoing situation represents a pivotal moment in the governance of Washington, D.C. The implications of Trump’s actions will likely affect the city’s law enforcement landscape and the broader political climate in the capital as both sides navigate this unprecedented federal intervention.
