UN’s Türk Urges Global Action on Eroding Human Rights NOW

UPDATE: On December 10, 2023, as the world observes International Human Rights Day, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has issued an urgent call to action regarding the alarming erosion of fundamental human rights across Europe. In a powerful statement, Türk emphasized that these rights should never be taken for granted, highlighting a concerning trend that threatens civic freedoms throughout the European Union (EU).

In a stark warning, Türk referenced the latest report on the rule of law in Europe, which reveals that “about half of EU member states have seen a reduction in civic space.” He stressed, “Civic space is what makes us thrive,” noting that the ability to express opinions, protest, and associate freely is under siege. “We are witnessing tendencies that aim to restrict civic space on critical issues like climate, migration, and environmental policy,” he stated.

The UN High Commissioner raised specific concerns about digital regulations in the EU, referencing the Digital Market Act and the Digital Services Act. While acknowledging the EU’s positive contributions globally, Türk cautioned against discussions that might lower human rights standards. “Europe is a leading example in regulating business and human rights,” he said, urging the 27 Member States to maintain their commitment to high standards of human rights due diligence.

Another critical issue Türk addressed is the dehumanization of migrants in political discourse. “The migration discussion often dehumanizes migrants and refugees,” he remarked, highlighting the dangers of such rhetoric. “We should never dehumanize any group, as it leads to a slippery slope affecting other parts of society.” Türk called for a fact-based debate to foster lasting solutions and move away from polarization.

The theme for this year’s International Human Rights Day is “Our Everyday Essentials,” a reminder that human rights are integral to daily life. Türk explained that these rights encompass access to food, water, sanitation, housing, healthcare, and education. He aims to remind everyone of the concrete reality of human rights, urging individuals to enjoy their rights while advocating for the rights of others both in Europe and globally.
