Urgent Alert: Two Fatal Crashes and 1,750 Speeders in One Week
URGENT UPDATE: Just announced, An Garda Síochána reports a shocking surge in road fatalities and reckless driving during the busy holiday season. Between December 1 and December 7, 2025, there have been two fatalities and 12 serious collisions across Ireland, prompting a dedicated road safety operation to ensure safer travel.
The enforcement operation, which started on December 1, will run until January 5, 2026. In just one week, authorities conducted over 1,750 checkpoints, resulting in the arrest of 118 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The alarming statistics reveal that more than 3,100 drivers were caught speeding, with the highest recorded speeds reaching a staggering 185 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N80 in Craan, Co. Carlow.
The holiday period is notorious for increased traffic, making it one of the most perilous times for road users. To date, 168 individuals have tragically lost their lives in road traffic collisions in Ireland this year, underscoring the urgent need for heightened awareness and responsibility on the roads.
“We’re asking everybody to support us in this campaign and make it a safe and happy Christmas for everybody,”
said Superintendent David Kelly of the Donegal Division. He emphasized the importance of community involvement in promoting safe driving practices and urged drivers to slow down, wear seatbelts, and avoid mobile phone use while driving.
Noteworthy incidents of reckless driving include:
– 112 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on Phibsborough Road, Dublin 7
– 107 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the N15 in Stranorlar, Co. Donegal
– 159 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the R418 in Kilcullen, Co. Kildare
– 184 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the M1 in Donabate, Co. Dublin
Authorities seized over 630 vehicles for various traffic violations, and approximately 390 Fixed Charge Notices were issued for using mobile phones while driving. An additional 110 notices targeted seatbelt violations.
With the Christmas season upon us, An Garda Síochána urges all road users to prioritize safety. The community’s involvement is crucial; residents are encouraged to intervene if they suspect someone is about to drive under the influence.
What’s Next: As the holiday traffic continues to swell, authorities remain on high alert, increasing visibility and enforcement efforts to prevent further tragedies. Stay tuned for continuous updates on road safety initiatives and enforcement actions.
