Urgent Hosepipe Ban Now in Effect for Waterford, Tipperary, and More

URGENT UPDATE: A new hosepipe ban is now in effect for Waterford, Tipperary, Wexford, and most of Cork, as authorities respond to a critical water shortage. This ban, issued by Uisce Éireann, will remain in place for seven weeks, until September 16, 2023. Notably, Cork City is excluded from this restriction.
The latest orders are an urgent measure aimed at conserving water supplies, as nearly 50 water supplies are currently experiencing drought status. Uisce Éireann emphasizes that using a hosepipe for just one hour consumes as much water as an average family uses in a day. Residents in the affected areas are strictly prohibited from using garden hoses or any water for non-essential activities, such as watering gardens, under this ban. Commercial premises are also included in these restrictions.
In a statement, Uisce Éireann outlined the need for these Water Conservation Orders, citing a significant rise in water demand since the onset of summer. “This has put increased pressure on rivers and other water sources supplying these areas, many of which are at historically low levels following a drier than normal autumn, winter, and spring,” the utility warned.
Mairead Conlon, Asset Strategy Manager at Uisce Éireann, stated that the past 12 months have been “drier than normal” compared to long-term averages. “While recent rainfall has brought some respite, it will take much longer for all our supplies to recover,” she added. The situation is further complicated by increased demand in southern regions due to warm weather and a surge in tourist activity.
Uisce Éireann is taking additional steps to alleviate the strain on water supplies, including repairing leaks and transporting water to reservoirs. Authorities are appealing to everyone, even those not under the ban, to conserve water where possible.
Residents are encouraged to adopt water-saving practices to help mitigate the ongoing crisis.
Stay tuned for further updates as this situation develops.
