Urgent: Ireland Faces Heavy Rainstorm This Weekend, Alerts Issued
UPDATE: Ireland is bracing for a significant weather shift this weekend, with Met Eireann issuing urgent weather warnings that could impact thousands. A Status Orange Rain warning is now in effect for Cork from 9 PM on September 30, 2023, until 5 AM on October 1, 2023, as forecasts predict up to 15 hours of heavy rainfall.
The orange alert warns of “heavy rain and possible thundery downpours,” which could lead to river flooding and extremely challenging travel conditions. This could affect both urban and rural areas, particularly in mountainous regions.
Alongside the orange warning, Status Yellow Rain warnings are set to take effect at 5 PM on September 30 for both Cork and Kerry, lasting until 5 AM on Sunday. A second yellow alert for Waterford will begin at 8 PM on Saturday and run through to 8 AM on Sunday, while another yellow warning for Wexford will start on Sunday morning.
Met Eireann emphasizes the seriousness of these weather conditions:
“Spells of heavy rain with the possibility of a few thundery downpours. Potential impacts include localized flooding and difficult travelling conditions.”
The weekend forecast indicates that Saturday will be “dull and breezy,” with scattered rain developing across the country, particularly in the southwest. Rainfall is expected to be heaviest in Munster, with temperatures ranging from 12 to 15 degrees Celsius.
On Sunday, the rain will initially be heavy and persistent in the north and east, followed by further thundery falls and spot flooding. As the rain clears northeastward, sunshine and showers will follow from the southwest, bringing a slight easing of winds. Temperatures will rise to between 14 and 17 degrees Celsius.
According to WX Charts, detailed rain storm tracking maps reveal the most intense rainfall arriving on Saturday night, with peak downpours expected early Sunday. The charts indicate that some areas could receive up to 40mm of rain on Sunday alone.
Residents are advised to monitor local conditions closely and prepare for potential disruptions. With travel and safety at risk, authorities urge everyone to stay informed through official channels like Met Eireann.
