A significant gathering took place in Letterkenny today as the community came together to commemorate the life of Ollie Horgan, a revered teacher and League of Ireland manager. Horgan, who passed away on August 28, 2023, at the age of 57 after a brief illness, left an indelible mark on both education and sports in Donegal.

Born in Salthill, Galway, Horgan began his career as a physical education and mathematics teacher at St Eunan’s College in Letterkenny in 1989. Over the years, he became a well-known figure in the local football community, initially recognized for his playing days with Fanad United. He later took on the role of first team manager for the club and achieved significant success, leading Finn Harps FC as their longest-serving manager for nine seasons starting in 2013. Most recently, he served as assistant manager at Galway United before stepping down earlier this month.

During the memorial service, Horgan’s contributions were symbolized by items placed on the altar, including a football, a whistle, and a team jersey. These artifacts reflected his profound impact not only on the field but also in the classroom. Known for his mentorship, Horgan earned the 2021 ASTI Achievement Award for his outstanding service to the school community and sports in Ireland.

The atmosphere within St Eunan’s College shifted to one of deep reflection as staff, students, and the public gathered to honor Horgan. A photograph of him was prominently displayed as Fr Damien Nejad led the service, which was co-celebrated by Monsignor Kevin Gillespie and former St Eunan’s College president, Fr Michael Carney.

Staff member Gracie Peoples delivered an emotional tribute, recalling Horgan’s kindness, purpose, and strength. “Ollie was a man who carried with him the best of both places; the warmth and wit of the west and the rugged loyalty of the northwest,” she said. She highlighted his dual role as both an educator and a coach, noting that his true subjects extended beyond academics to encompass resilience, respect, and heart.

Peoples emphasized Horgan’s humility, stating, “He never looked for praise, but he earned it.” This sentiment resonated with many who knew him, reflecting on his dedication to his students and players. He was described as a man of great intelligence, who made everyone feel valued and seen.

The school principal, Damien McCroary, expressed the profound sense of loss felt by the entire school community. He remembered Horgan as a “wonderful colleague” who brought laughter to the halls of St Eunan’s. “He was a friend, a person you could confide in, a man of many talents,” McCroary said. “Everyone here has fond memories of Ollie, and these are to be treasured.”

During the homily, Fr Nejad reflected on Horgan’s impact, stating, “What we do with whatever years we have on this earth does matter. There is no doubt that Ollie touched a lot of people.” He pointed out Horgan’s commitment to his students, mentioning how he discreetly supported those in need, ensuring they had uniforms and opportunities for part-time work.

In addition to his sporting prowess, Horgan was musically talented, often playing the piano at school events. His multifaceted contributions established him not only as an educator but as a cherished figure in the community.

The service concluded with a heartfelt rendition of “This is my homeland,” a fitting tribute to a man who had firmly established his roots in Donegal.

Funeral arrangements for Ollie Horgan have been announced. His remains will repose at the family home in Cahermorris, Corrandulla, Galway on Saturday, followed by a viewing at the O’Flaherty Funeral Parlour in Galway on Sunday from 15:00 to 18:00. The Requiem Mass will take place on Monday at the Church of Christ the King, Salthill, at 12:00, with burial at Rahoon Cemetery.

Horgan is survived by his wife, Anita, and their children, Emma, Anthony, Brendan, Conor, and David, as well as his siblings and extended family. His legacy in both education and sports will undoubtedly continue to resonate in the hearts of those who knew him.
