A Dublin councillor is calling on Fingal County Council to take a proactive stance in the “Ask for Angela” campaign, aimed at assisting victims of sexual harassment and assault in public venues. Aontú councillor Ellen Troy announced her intention to write to the council, urging them to actively promote this initiative.

The “Ask for Angela” campaign encourages individuals who feel unsafe or threatened in places like bars and nightclubs to request help using a discreet codeword. By asking venue staff to speak with “Angela,” victims can signal their need for assistance without drawing attention. Trained personnel are then available to provide support.

Ms. Troy emphasized the importance of this initiative, citing recent studies indicating that as many as 30% of women in Ireland experience sexual harassment in public spaces. “This statistic highlights the necessity of having accessible support options in our community,” she stated.

She further noted that implementing the campaign in local pubs, clubs, and community venues has demonstrated effectiveness in reducing instances of harassment and enhancing safety awareness. Yet, Ms. Troy pointed out that many victims may still be unaware of how to seek help.

“A coordinated effort by our local authority would significantly aid local businesses in promoting the ‘Ask for Angela’ campaign,” Ms. Troy explained. “This would represent a crucial step forward.”

To amplify the initiative, she suggested that Fingal County Council allocate resources for promoting the campaign through various channels, including social media, local press, and public posters in key venues. She identified numerous possibilities for collaboration, such as partnering with local businesses, pubs, and community groups to facilitate training and awareness programs.

Additionally, Ms. Troy proposed organizing community events or informational sessions to educate the public about how the “Ask for Angela” system works and its benefits. “I urge Fingal County Council to make our area a safer place for everyone by ensuring this vital initiative receives the attention and support it deserves,” she added.

“This campaign has the potential to literally save lives,” Ms. Troy concluded. Fingal County Council has been approached for comment regarding this initiative and the proposed support for the campaign.
