Astrophysics Student Drives Historic Promotion for GAA Club

Eamon McGleenan, an astrophysics PhD student and player for O’Connells Tullysaran GAC in County Armagh, utilized Big Data to secure the club’s promotion to senior level for the first time in its 135-year history. This unprecedented success culminated in winning the Armagh Intermediate Football League 2A in July by a narrow margin of just two points.

McGleenan is part of the Predictive Sports Analytics (PSA) team at Queen’s University Belfast, where he combines his academic expertise with practical sports applications. The PSA team has previously collaborated with various soccer, rugby, and GAA clubs, but this project marked a new chapter in their research. Over the course of five months, McGleenan and his colleagues analyzed an astonishing 550 million individual measurements from the team using STATSports GPS hardware. This detailed analysis included key metrics such as player speed, acceleration, directional changes, and heart rates.

Transforming Training Through Data

“Our academic foundations are in astrophysics, and we applied mathematical models to the Big Data we obtained from the athletes,” McGleenan explained. The data allowed the team to track how the players evolved over time, providing crucial insights that informed tailored training regimes and match tactics. The collaboration between the PSA team and the club’s management was instrumental in this process.

The results were nothing short of extraordinary. The team’s victory in the league not only marks a significant milestone for Tullysaran but also highlights the potential of data analytics in grassroots sports. The club, which boasts fewer than 500 members, will enter the Senior Football League in March 2024, a feat that has generated excitement and pride within the community.

Professor David Jess, McGleenan’s supervisor at Queen’s, emphasized the importance of bridging physics, mathematics, and sports science. “We are helping to revolutionize how data is processed, visualized, and disseminated,” he noted, adding that the collaboration with Tullysaran showcases the impact of innovative modeling approaches on sports club success worldwide.

Insights into Performance Data Usage

The partnership has also garnered praise from Tullysaran’s manager, Pauric McGlone, who described the statistical insights provided by the PSA team as invaluable. “The reports are easy to read and interpret,” he stated, noting how the data assists in balancing training loads, especially leading up to match days. This analytical approach not only enhances player conditioning but also fosters a competitive spirit within the squad.

While the use of performance data is not new in GAA circles, the dramatic results achieved by Tullysaran highlight a significant advancement in the application of analytics in the sport. Although some critics, such as former player Pat Spillane, have referred to excessive data analysis as “paralysis by analysis,” the trend towards utilizing GPS trackers and integrated cameras has become commonplace among inter-county teams.

Recent data from STATSports revealed striking improvements in female Gaelic football, with average distances covered by midfielders during matches increasing from 6.9 km in 2021 to 7.3 km in 2023. This data indicates a rising intensity in gameplay, showcasing how analytics can drive performance improvements.
