Expert Reveals Simple Trick to Prevent Clothes from Fading

As families grapple with rising living costs, finding effective ways to prolong the life of clothing has become increasingly important. A clothing specialist, Leanne Smith from Trendy Tots, has shared a simple and affordable solution that can help prevent clothes from fading in the wash.
According to Smith, many people overlook the impact of washing practices on the longevity of their garments. She explains, “We all want our clothing to look new, and one of the biggest reasons we get rid of them is that colours can start to fade.” This fading often occurs when detergents cling to the fabric, leading to wear over time. Smith suggests a surprising household item that can mitigate this issue: black pepper.
Black Pepper as a Protective Barrier
Adding a spoonful of black pepper to the wash can create a barrier between clothes and detergent, helping to maintain colour vibrancy. Smith notes, “Most people will already have it in their cupboards too, but if you don’t, you can pick it up from the local supermarket.” The best part, she insists, is that the pepper rinses away completely, leaving no smell behind while ensuring clothes look newer for longer.
Families often spend hundreds of dollars annually replacing faded clothing items, such as T-shirts and jumpers. By implementing this simple hack, Smith believes households can save money and reduce waste. “By trying this simple hack, you can cut down on waste, save money, and keep your favourite outfits looking as good as new,” she adds.
Effective Washing Practices
In addition to using black pepper, Smith emphasizes the importance of washing machine settings. She recommends washing at cooler temperatures, with a 30-degree cycle being sufficient for most loads. This not only cleans clothes effectively but also protects them from shrinking, stretching, and fading.
Overloading the washing machine can also damage clothes, as it prevents proper rinsing. Smith advises against cramming too many garments into the drum. “Your garments need room to move around so detergent can rinse away completely,” she explains.
Excessive washing, using too much detergent, and tumble drying can significantly shorten a garment’s lifespan. Smith warns that these practices weaken the fabric and fade colours prematurely. When possible, air-drying clothes can help maintain their shape and prolong their life, while also reducing heating costs.
Ultimately, adopting better laundry habits alongside simple tricks like adding black pepper can help families preserve their clothing investments in an increasingly cost-conscious environment.
