Letterkenny Councillor Proposes Traffic Wardens to Ease Congestion
A Letterkenny councillor is advocating for the deployment of traffic wardens and Gardaí to alleviate persistent traffic congestion in the town. Councillor Tomás Sean Devine, representing the 100% Redress Party, plans to present a motion at the upcoming Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District meeting on October 3, 2023. He believes immediate action is necessary until major infrastructure projects can be completed.
Devine highlighted that certain areas of Letterkenny experience significant congestion at peak times. “Any help trying to sort this would go a long way in helping those constantly stuck in traffic,” he stated. He emphasized the pressing need for personnel to direct traffic, particularly during rush hours, as plans for new bridges and relief roads are projected to take at least eight to ten years to materialize.
The councillor expressed concern for local businesses, stating, “Local businesses and shops will never survive if this traffic congestion continues.” His proposal is reminiscent of a successful operation in May 2019, when Gardaí were brought in to manage evening traffic in Letterkenny, a move that was well-received by the community.
This motion will be discussed during the municipal meeting, where Donegal County Council is expected to provide a response. Additionally, the Mayor of Letterkenny-Milford, Ciaran Brogan, plans to propose a Special Roads Workshop. This workshop aims to address the urgent need for traffic calming measures throughout the Municipal District.
In a related event, a public meeting was held in the Oldtown area of Letterkenny on October 2, 2023, where residents gathered to protest ongoing traffic issues and demand action regarding proposed relief roads. Organiser Mary T. Sweeney of the political party Aontú encouraged attendees to unite and sign a petition addressing these critical concerns.
During the event, Councillor Devine reflected on the worsening traffic conditions since he first arrived in Letterkenny 21 years ago, describing the situation as “shambolic.” The call for traffic management solutions resonates with many residents who experience the daily challenges posed by congestion.
As discussions unfold, the community remains hopeful that effective measures will be implemented to tackle the traffic issues that have long affected Letterkenny, allowing both residents and businesses to thrive.
