Poland Shoots Down Drones Amid Russian Attacks on Ukraine

UPDATE: Poland’s armed forces have just confirmed the shooting down of multiple drones violating the nation’s airspace amid escalating tensions from a Russian attack on Ukraine. Early on the morning of October 25, 2023, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that the military is responding to repeated incursions as Russian forces intensified their assault on western Ukraine.
In a swift operation, the Polish military declared its highest state of readiness, actively engaging in efforts to locate and neutralize the downed objects. “Weapons have been deployed, and operations are underway,” stated the armed forces in a post on X. As a precaution, they have advised citizens to stay alert and follow announcements from the Polish army and police.
Deputy Defence Minister Cezary Tomczyk underscored the urgency of the situation, emphasizing that the operation aims to “neutralise” unidentified flying objects breaching Polish airspace. Tusk, who is on the ground overseeing the operation, noted that he is in constant communication with the Ministry of Defence and has received updates from the operational commander.
Three regions are currently considered vulnerable: Podlaskie, Mazowieckie, and Lublin Voivodeships, all of which border Ukraine and Belarus. Notably, Chopin Airport in Mazowieckie has been closed following drone sightings in the area, impacting air travel. Other airports, including Rzeszów-Jasionka and Lublin Airport, have also suspended operations.
This urgent response from Poland comes as air raid alerts were issued across much of Ukraine overnight, with ongoing fears of missile and drone attacks from Russian forces. The situation remains fluid, and the Polish government is taking every measure to ensure the safety of its citizens while safeguarding national security.
As the situation develops, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and adhere to safety protocols. Further updates will follow as more information becomes available. Stay tuned for breaking news on this critical situation.
