Kilkenny Residents Encouraged to Nominate Volunteers for Awards

Nominations are now open for the Irish Red Cross National Volunteer Awards 2025, providing an opportunity for the public to recognize the invaluable contributions of local volunteers. This initiative celebrates individuals who offer essential support to communities during times of crisis and need.
Earlier this year, Kilkenny resident Angela Hayes received the prestigious title of Humanitarian of the Year at the seventh annual Irish Red Cross Humanitarian Awards. Following this recognition, the National Volunteer Awards aim to highlight the remarkable efforts of volunteers in Kilkenny and beyond, who provide comfort, assistance, and reassurance to those affected by emergencies.
According to Deirdre Garvey, Secretary General of the Irish Red Cross, “Our volunteers are the people who show up.” She emphasized their commitment to both significant events and everyday acts of kindness, such as teaching first aid or delivering groceries to elderly neighbors. “These awards are our chance to show up for them,” she added, reflecting the organization’s dedication to acknowledging those who selflessly contribute their time and skills.
Acknowledging Diverse Contributions
The Irish Red Cross National Volunteer Awards recognize various categories of contributions, inviting nominations for volunteers who have made a significant impact in their communities. Individuals who provided essential supplies during severe weather conditions, like the January snowfall, or those who responded to the aftermath of Storm Éowyn are prime candidates.
Additionally, volunteers who ensure safety at local events, teach life-saving skills, or provide support to vulnerable populations are encouraged to be nominated. The awards will also highlight those who assist in integrating families fleeing conflicts, such as those from Ukraine and Gaza, into local communities through events and support services.
The organization operates with 73 branches and approximately 4,000 members across Ireland, all dedicated to enhancing community resilience. Their efforts include training in emergency response and offering support to those in need, which makes nominations for these awards even more meaningful.
How to Nominate
Community members in Kilkenny are urged to nominate a deserving Irish Red Cross volunteer. There are multiple categories for recognition, including Volunteer of the Year, Young Volunteer of the Year, Community Support Volunteer of the Year, and the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Nominations are open until September 30, 2025, at 17:00. Interested individuals can visit www.redcross.ie/nva for details on the nomination process and tips for writing a compelling submission. The winners will be honored at an awards ceremony to be held in Croke Park, Dublin, on November 29, 2025.
This initiative not only celebrates the dedication of volunteers but also encourages community engagement and highlights the essential role of the Irish Red Cross in fostering a supportive and resilient Ireland.
