Community Mourns the Passing of Letterkenny’s Victor Fisher
The community of Letterkenny is in mourning following the death of Victor Fisher, a former town councillor and respected local figure. Mr. Fisher passed away on March 14, 2023, at his home in Anfield Grove, Kiltoy, at the age of 85. He is survived by his wife, Helen, their children, and numerous grandchildren and relatives.
Born in Ramelton in 1940, Victor Fisher moved to Letterkenny at the age of six. Throughout his life, he was known as a proud “Letterkenny man” and made significant contributions to the town through various business ventures, political roles, and extensive involvement in local sports. His political career included three terms as Mayor, a position he held with great pride.
Victor began his political journey with the Fine Gael party, later joining Fianna Fáil in 1969, under the mentorship of Senator Bernard McGlinchey. He was elected to the Letterkenny Urban District Council seven consecutive times, retiring undefeated. His dedication to public service and community concerns was evident in his role as a Commissioner of Oaths and Peace Commissioner, where he acted as a liaison between constituents and the council.
Passion for Football and Community Engagement
Outside of politics, Victor was an ardent football supporter, particularly of Liverpool FC. He affectionately named his family home “Anfield” in homage to the club. His commitment to local football was substantial, dedicating around 30 years to Finn Harps and serving as Honorary President of Letterkenny Rovers since 2023.
Victor was also a familiar face in the community, having worked for over 30 years at Harris’ Shop on Main Street before opening his own store, Victor’s Gift Shop, near the Post Office. Even after the town council was disbanded, he remained active in the community, often seen selling lotto tickets and engaging with residents.
Funeral Arrangements and Tributes
The Funeral Mass for Victor Fisher is scheduled for this Sunday, March 14, 2023, at St Eunan’s Cathedral. The details are as follows: reposing at his home from 11:00 on Saturday, March 13, to 12:00 on Sunday, followed by a funeral procession at 12:45 to the cathedral for a Mass at 13:30. Interment will take place at the family plot in New Leck Cemetery.
Family flowers are requested, with donations welcome for the Donegal Hospice, coordinated through Paschal Blake Funeral Director.
Victor Fisher is deeply mourned not only by his family but also by friends, neighbours, and the entire community of Letterkenny, reflecting his significant impact on the town. His legacy of service, passion for sport, and genuine care for others will be fondly remembered.
