Gardaí Investigate Racist Defacement of Irish Flag in Limerick

Gardaí have initiated an investigation into the defacement of an Irish tricolour flag in Limerick, where the phrase “Get them Out” was inscribed in blue marker pen. The incident was reported by local councillor, Cllr Daniel Butler, who discovered the flag at the entrance of a suburban estate.
The councillor expressed his outrage over the act, stating, “It’s disgusting. It doesn’t reflect our community. Our community is a very diverse community.” He emphasized the flag’s location, noting that many immigrants live and work in the area, contributing to the local economy. Cllr Butler represents Fine Gael and believes that the message on the flag is harmful and divisive.
Cllr Butler further stated, “We are in close proximity to the hospital. So we have many people from diverse communities who work here. We have many people working in the various factories in the industrial estate living locally.” His comments highlight the multicultural fabric of Limerick, underscoring the importance of inclusivity.
The councillor condemned the slogan as “racist wording,” saying, “It’s highly offensive. We all know what they mean when they say ‘get them out’, and then to deface the Irish flag in doing so adds insult to injury.” He pointed out that the Irish flag symbolizes unity and a globalized community, making the act particularly disheartening for those who see it as an affront to their contributions to society.
A spokesperson for the Gardaí confirmed that officers are “carrying out enquiries following a report received from a member of the public.” The investigation aims to identify those responsible for the defacement and to address concerns within the community about rising intolerance.
Community leaders and residents have expressed their support for a diverse and inclusive environment, reinforcing the idea that Limerick is a welcoming place for all. Many hope that the investigation will lead to accountability and a reaffirmation of the community’s values.
As the inquiry continues, Limerick’s residents remain vigilant against acts of discrimination, emphasizing the need for solidarity and respect among all community members.
