UPDATE: The sanding and seeding of the new playing surface at MacCumhaill Park in Donegal has been completed, marking a significant milestone in the park’s major redevelopment project. The works, finalized on October 18, 2025, are part of a comprehensive €500,000 renovation that began earlier this year.

The project aims to enhance Donegal’s premier GAA ground with new floodlighting, improved drainage, and increased accessibility. Charlie McConalogue, Donegal Minister of State for Sport, visited the site on Friday to inspect the progress and meet with local officials and the main contractor, William Coyle.

“It’s great to see the project advancing to this stage, with the sanding and seeding taking place on Thursday,” McConalogue stated. He highlighted the importance of completing these surface works before winter, ensuring that the park remains a vital community hub.

MacCumhaill Park, a venue steeped in history since its official opening in 1956, last underwent significant improvements in 1988. The Minister commended the club for spearheading this essential project, stating, “This is a once-in-a-lifetime undertaking, and the new top-quality playing surface will be there for generations of players to use.”

Funding for the project was secured through the Sports Capital Allowance Grant, awarded in September 2024. The allocation not only covers the new playing surface but also extends to the installation of state-of-the-art floodlights, renovation of toilet facilities, and enhancements to disabled areas, ensuring comfort and accessibility for all visitors.

While the ongoing construction may cause temporary inconveniences for MacCumhaill’s teams, McConalogue reassured that the long-term benefits will be substantial when the pitch reopens for games in the coming year.

Stay tuned for further updates as this significant redevelopment transforms MacCumhaill Park into a state-of-the-art facility, ready to host future sporting events and community gatherings.
