Cyprus President Calls for Immediate Reunification Talks
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides has expressed readiness to resume negotiations for the reunification of the island of Cyprus, stating he is prepared to start talks as early as next week. This announcement follows the election of pro-EU leader Tufan Erhüman in Turkish-occupied Northern Cyprus, who campaigned on a platform advocating for reunification. President Christodoulides made these remarks during an exclusive interview with Euronews on November 3, 2023, as Cyprus gears up for its presidency of the European Union in January 2024.
The last significant effort for reunification took place in 2017, when UN-backed negotiations in Switzerland collapsed. President Christodoulides believes the recent political shift in Northern Cyprus could pave the way for renewed discussions. He stated, “If Erhüman comes to the negotiating table and talks clearly about bi-zonal, bi-communal federation, then I think the road is open for the solution of the Cyprus problem based on the UN Security Council resolution.”
In contrast, Christodoulides dismissed the notion of a two-state solution proposed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The island has remained divided since a Turkish invasion in 1974, which followed a Greek-led coup aimed at unification with Greece. This division, separating the internationally recognized Republic of Cyprus from Turkish Northern Cyprus, persists despite multiple attempts to broker peace.
EU Enlargement and Regional Stability
During the interview, President Christodoulides also emphasized the importance of EU enlargement, a topic that has seen little action in recent years. He highlighted the need for the EU to deliver on its promises to candidate countries, warning that failure to do so may lead to disillusionment. He specifically mentioned Montenegro while calling for positive steps regarding EU accession under Cyprus’ leadership.
“Enlargement is one of the most important geopolitical tools of the European Union,” he said, expressing concern over the potential consequences if candidate nations turn away from the bloc. Such a shift could allow non-EU actors to gain influence in the western Balkans, a region already fraught with political complexities.
President Christodoulides also outlined his intention to strengthen ties between the EU and the Middle East when Cyprus assumes the EU presidency. He aims to facilitate the implementation of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza, emphasizing that “there is no other alternative right now in front of us.”
He presented a six-point plan to support humanitarian efforts in Gaza, which includes facilitating aid delivery and training Palestinian security forces. This initiative aligns with Trump’s broader plan focused on humanitarian assistance, economic recovery, and governance in the region.
Ongoing Challenges in Europe
Addressing the situation in Ukraine, Christodoulides conveyed a somber outlook regarding the ongoing conflict. He stated, “I don’t see the end of the war in Ukraine coming,” underlining the necessity for continued support for Kyiv. He reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to opposing Russia’s actions in Ukraine and announced plans to visit the country in early December, shortly before Cyprus takes over the EU presidency.
The Cypriot President’s remarks reflect a proactive approach to both regional and international issues, highlighting Cyprus’ strategic position as a bridge between Europe and the Middle East. As negotiations regarding reunification loom, the upcoming months may prove crucial for the future of Cyprus and its role within the EU.
