Last weekend proved eventful for Kilkenny soccer clubs, featuring a mix of triumphs and disappointments in both local and provincial competitions. The results highlight the competitive nature of the sport in the region, with teams striving for success across different formats.

Leinster Senior Cup Action

In the Leinster Senior Cup, Freebooters suffered a setback as they were eliminated by St Peter’s Athlone. After taking a lead through a goal from Owen Hanney in the 48th minute, Freebooters found themselves on the back foot. St Peter’s responded with an equalizer in the 70th minute, followed by a last-minute winner, leaving the home side reeling from their 2-1 defeat.

Challenges in the Junior Cups

The challenges continued in the O’Neill’s Leinster Junior Cup, where Tullaroan faced Temple Villa. A solitary goal in the 14th minute was enough to end Tullaroan’s hopes of advancing, marking another disappointing result for the Kilkenny club, who have yet to secure a victory in their last three matches.

In the Junior Pat Maher Shield, River Rangers put up a strong fight against Bridge United. Despite a commendable effort that included two goals from Josh Barcoe, River Rangers ultimately fell short, losing 3-2. Barcoe opened the scoring early, but Bridge United quickly leveled before securing their victory with goals from Kieran Timmins and Barcoe again late in the match. River Rangers’ late goal from Richie Keoghan in stoppage time may serve as motivation as they continue their domestic campaign.

Premier Division Highlights

In the Junior St Canice’s Credit Union Premier Division, Fort Rangers emerged victorious over Newpark with a commanding 3-1 win. After falling behind to a goal from Anthony Delaney, Fort Rangers rallied with three unanswered goals in the second half. This victory places Fort Rangers at the top of the league standings, boasting six wins from eight matches. Newpark, currently positioned fourth, remains seven points behind the leaders.

With the conclusion of this weekend’s fixtures, Kilkenny clubs will look to regroup and refocus as they return to domestic action in the following days. Further local results and updates will be available in this week’s edition of Kilkenny People Sport.
