The holiday season in Dublin officially kicked off as the city unveiled its Christmas lights, installed across 24 locations by the local business collective, Dublin Town. These energy-efficient displays are set to illuminate the city, with the official switch-on scheduled for later this month.

According to Richard Guiney, CEO of Dublin Town, the installation process involves a significant effort. “It takes 30 people, working through the night over four weeks and 200 hours to erect the lights,” he stated. Guiney emphasized that the lights not only enhance the festive atmosphere but also attract thousands of visitors who take selfies beneath the iconic displays. He noted, “They are the major catalyst of the City centre Christmas buzz and drive a sense of joy, as well as attracting footfall.”

Dublin Town has played a crucial role in expanding the city’s Christmas lights project. All lighting used is low energy LED, regulated by time clocks, making the installation environmentally friendly. Notably, the lights on Grafton Street consume just one-third of the electricity used by a domestic shower.

Festive Activities and Events Planned

The Christmas lights are part of the anticipated Winter in Dublin 2025 programme, which promises a vibrant array of music, culture, and festive cheer from November through January. For those seeking a unique experience, the DoDublin Christmas Lights Tours will commence on November 21. Visitors can enjoy an open-top bus ride, taking in illuminated landmarks such as the Samuel Beckett Bridge and Grafton Street, accompanied by festive carols and storytelling.

Additionally, Twilight Tours at St Patrick’s Cathedral, running from November 4-25, offer guests a guided exploration of the cathedral’s rich history, enhanced by the sound of tolling bells at twilight. The Dublin Winter Lights initiative will further contribute to the festive ambience, illuminating landmarks, bridges, trees, and statues from the River Liffey to Merrion Square Park.

Celebrating Dublin’s Unique Spirit

Emma Woods, head of marketing communications at Fáilte Ireland, highlighted the significance of the Winter in Dublin programme. “It celebrates what makes this city so special — its creativity, its character, and its capacity to bring people together,” she stated. “Whether it’s a late-night street festival, a world-class concert, or simply a stroll through the city under the lights, this year’s programme promises to bring buzz and excitement all across Dublin.”

The festive celebrations will culminate in a unique event—Love Actually in Concert at the Convention Centre Dublin on December 20, where the RTÉ Concert Orchestra will perform the iconic film score live-to-film.

Details of the full programme can be found at VisitDublin.com, ensuring that residents and visitors alike can fully embrace the festive spirit in the capital.
