Swimming Restrictions Lifted at North Dublin Beaches Ahead of Warm Weekend

Temporary swimming restrictions have been lifted at Rush South and Portrane beaches in north Dublin. The “do not swim” notices were issued by Fingal County Council on August 9, 2025, due to a sewage overflow from a nearby pump station. Recent water quality assessments revealed that both locations now meet the necessary standards for safe swimming.
Samples collected on August 13 showed that water quality at both beaches was classified as “excellent.” Following consultations with the Health Service Executive (HSE), Fingal County Council determined that the restrictions could be revoked. This news arrives just in time for a warm weekend, with temperatures expected to reach up to 27°C, enticing many Dublin residents to the coast.
Water Quality Status Prior to Lifting Restrictions
Before the restrictions, Rush South beach had consistently been rated with “excellent” water quality throughout the 2025 bathing season, according to the Environmental Protection Agency’s beaches.ie website. Portrane beach also maintained a strong rating, classified as either “excellent” or “good.”
The most recent water quality samples from Balbriggan Front Strand beach taken on August 11 also indicated “excellent” conditions. In contrast, Sandymount Strand has faced a no-swim restriction that has been in place for the entirety of the 2025 season.
Accessing Water Quality Information
Members of the public can usually check the water quality status of the 153 bathing waters across Ireland via beaches.ie. However, as of today, there is a service disruption affecting updates on the site. Each beach also features a notice board that provides information on current water conditions, ensuring visitors can stay informed.
With restrictions now lifted and favorable weather forecasted, the beaches in north Dublin are set to attract a significant number of visitors this weekend. Residents are encouraged to enjoy the improved conditions while remaining aware of water quality updates at their local beaches.
