Community Mourns Paul Fitzpatrick After Tragic Hunting Accident
A tragic hunting accident in Co Carlow claimed the life of Paul Fitzpatrick, a 21-year-old from Bagenalstown, on March 25, 2025. The incident occurred around 23:00 near the village of Leighlinbridge, while Fitzpatrick was participating in a fox hunt with a friend.
The funeral Mass, held at St Andrew’s Church in Bagenalstown, drew a large crowd, including members from the local Bagenalstown Gaels GAA football and hurling clubs, who formed a guard of honour as Fitzpatrick’s wicker coffin was carried into the church. His family, friends, and community members gathered to celebrate a life described as vibrant and full of energy.
Fitzpatrick is survived by his parents, Darran and Rosemarie, his brothers Billy and Niall, his girlfriend Ebony, and a wide circle of relatives and friends. During the ceremony, his godparents presented heartfelt symbols of life, including a family photograph and a trophy commemorating his passion for motocross.
In his homily, parish priest Fr Declan Foley highlighted Fitzpatrick’s authenticity and zest for life. “He lived life to the full and enjoyed life to the full,” Fr Foley stated. “He was taken just too early from all of us.”
Niall, Paul’s younger brother, shared a personal reflection during the service, which resonated with the congregation. Darran Fitzpatrick, speaking during the eulogy, expressed immense pride in his son. He noted the strong friendships Paul forged and remarked on a challenging year that included reconstructive surgery on both ankles. “Earlier this year, Paul had a tough time… He really saw how strong his bond was with his brothers, friends, and Ebony,” Darran shared.
The family expressed gratitude for the emergency services that responded to the incident with compassion and dignity. “We will be forever grateful that Paul got to live his life to the full and that he was enjoying one of his favourite sports with his friend,” Darran added.
Following the Mass, burial took place at Wells Cemetery in Royal Oak, where family and friends continued to pay their respects. The community’s outpouring of support highlighted the deep impact Fitzpatrick had on those around him, as they remembered a young man who truly embraced life.
