Rising Energy Costs Top Concerns for Businesses, Survey Finds

A recent nationwide survey conducted by IP Telecom has identified rising energy costs as the primary concern for businesses as they prepare for the winter season. Approximately 40% of the 500 business leaders surveyed indicated that energy expenses weigh heavily on their operations, closely followed by global uncertainty, which was cited by 36% of respondents.
The survey, conducted on 12 September 2025, highlights various operational pressures facing businesses today. Labour shortages and wage pressures were significant issues for 25% of respondents, while regulatory costs and compliance requirements affected 23%. Additionally, challenges related to broadband and telecom infrastructure and supply chain disruptions were noted by 20% of businesses, with 16% mentioning commercial rent as a concern. Only a small percentage, 2%, reported no specific factors straining their operations.
Despite these challenges, optimism remains strong among business leaders. The survey revealed that 78% of respondents expressed confidence in the Irish economy over the next 12 months. This positive outlook is important as businesses navigate the complexities of the current economic landscape.
Telecom Investments Reflect Changing Priorities
The survey results also underscored the growing importance of telecom technology in shaping investment decisions. A significant 62% of businesses indicated they are likely to switch their telecom provider within the next year. This shift reflects an increasing emphasis on reliability and local presence among service providers.
When evaluating potential telecom partners, businesses prioritized several key features. Product reliability was the primary concern for 46% of respondents, followed closely by the reliability of support services at 45% and security features at 44%. Other important factors included integration with existing software, innovation, brand recognition, and local support.
Robin Russell, Chief Commercial Officer of IP Telecom, commented on the survey findings, stating, “While challenges such as rising energy costs and global uncertainty remain top of mind for our customers and business leaders across Ireland, these results show that companies are actively adapting and investing in technology. Whether that’s reviewing their telecoms and broadband efficacy and providers or exploring AI tools to stay competitive, understanding that innovation is no longer an option but a necessity.”
The remarks from Russell highlight a proactive approach among businesses in response to economic pressures. Many are recognizing the need to innovate and enhance their operations to maintain competitiveness in an evolving market.
In conclusion, the survey from IP Telecom underscores the critical challenges that businesses face today, particularly concerning rising energy costs and global uncertainty. However, the willingness to adapt and invest in technology suggests a resilient outlook for the future of the Irish economy.
