John Meyler, who first coached Horgan at the age of 12 with the Cork Primary Games team in 2001, recognized his potential immediately. “You could see how good he was and how good he was going to be,” Meyler recalled. This prediction was validated nearly two decades later, during an All-Ireland quarter-final against Kilkenny, where Horgan scored an impressive 3-10.

Meyler emphasized the luxury of coaching such a talented player. “There’s very little instruction you give a guy like him because he has so much talent,” he said. The focus shifted to building a team around Horgan, ensuring he received the support he needed to shine. The consistency of Horgan’s performance often went unnoticed, with many failing to appreciate the effort he dedicated to his craft.

“He was down there at 5 PM practicing what you saw on the pitch the following weekend,” Meyler noted. This commitment transformed practice into seamless performances during games against teams like Kilkenny and Tipperary.
