Elon Musk Backs Conor McGregor for Irish Presidency, Criticizes Simon Harris

Elon Musk has stirred controversy in Irish politics by publicly endorsing Conor McGregor’s campaign for the presidency. In a tweet on his X platform, Musk criticized Simon Harris, the Tánaiste, stating, “Shame on Simon Harris for tyrannically blocking the will of the people of Ireland! Conor McGregor for President to save Ireland.” This intervention followed Harris’s recommendation to Fine Gael councillors to refrain from supporting independent presidential candidates.
Candidates aiming for the presidency must secure backing from at least 20 members of the Oireachtas or four local authorities to appear on the ballot. Musk’s comments have been described as bizarre by some observers, considering his limited connection to Irish political affairs. His endorsement adds a notable twist to McGregor’s already unconventional bid for the presidency.
McGregor’s Vision for Ireland
Conor McGregor, a former mixed martial arts champion, has been vocal about his presidential aspirations. Last week, he made headlines by appearing outside Government Buildings in Dublin, where he recorded a video outlining his vision for the presidency. In his message, McGregor claimed the current Government has compromised “our peace of mind, our security, our hope for the future,” and highlighted what he described as a dramatic decline in the wellbeing of Irish citizens.
He specifically addressed the issue of homelessness, asserting, “We have seen homelessness of Irish children risen to levels unprecedented, proving this government’s refusal to abide by and respect our proclamation where all children of Ireland are to be cherished. Instead, our children abandoned.” McGregor also expressed concerns regarding immigration and suggested that tourism and safety in Ireland have deteriorated.
In the video, McGregor urged local councillors to disregard party lines in their nominations, stating, “If you are a councillor who feels your voice is ignored, your hands tied, and your community overlooked, then I ask you to stand with me. Nominate me, and I will give you the platform and power to be truly heard.”
The Current Political Landscape
Despite his vigorous campaigning, McGregor has yet to secure endorsements from any councils for his presidential bid. The involvement of Musk, one of the world’s most influential tech billionaires, in McGregor’s campaign further complicates the political landscape. As the presidential race unfolds, the dynamics between established political figures and unconventional candidates like McGregor will continue to be closely scrutinized.
Musk’s remarks and McGregor’s bold campaign strategy highlight the growing intersection of celebrity culture and politics in Ireland, raising questions about the future of political engagement in the country. Whether McGregor can successfully rally support and gain the necessary endorsements remains to be seen, but his campaign is already reshaping the narrative of the upcoming presidential election.
