Fashion Fan Discovers TK Maxx Leggings ‘Bargain’ Was Misleading

A fashion enthusiast recently shared her experience of what she initially believed was a remarkable bargain at TK Maxx, only to find it was not quite as impressive as she had thought. Elle Sweeney, a TikTok user, was excited to discover a pair of thick, ribbed brown leggings from the brand Stradivarius priced at just £4.
The original price tag indicated the leggings were worth £17.99, prompting Elle to celebrate her find. In a video posted to her TikTok account, she expressed her joy, stating, “They’re from that brand Stradivarius and they’re £18 on the label… but they were £4 and I thought, that is SO cheap!” However, her excitement turned to disappointment when she peeled back the clearance sticker. Underneath, she discovered the leggings were originally priced at £4.99, effectively meaning she saved only £0.99.
Elle’s video resonated with many viewers, sparking a wave of comments. One user noted, “Tbf though, that still IS a bargain.” Another added humorously, “I had a red sticker for a pair of shoes for £19.20. I thought bargain. Got home and they were £19.99 before.”
Despite the light-hearted nature of the comments, some users cautioned about the quality of the leggings. One commenter mentioned experiencing repeated tears in the same area after just one wear, advising caution for potential buyers. Elle responded with concern, acknowledging the issue.
Understanding TK Maxx’s Pricing Strategies
To grasp how TK Maxx offers discounted prices on various products, it’s essential to understand its off-price business model. The retailer purchases merchandise from a range of brands and designers at reduced rates, allowing it to sell items at lower prices compared to traditional retail outlets. The inventory often includes overstocked items, last season’s fashions, and products from cancelled orders.
For those keen on finding genuine bargains, it is useful to decipher the “secret codes” on TK Maxx price tags. Grace Forell, known as The Sustainable Shopper on social media, explained that the single digits found on tags can indicate the best deals. According to her insights, the numbers 1, 2, and 7 are particularly significant. A tag marked with 1 typically signifies that the item was made specifically for TK Maxx, suggesting it might not be a fantastic bargain, while 7 indicates a “packaway” item from a previous season. Forell emphasized that the number 2 represents the “thriftiest number” to look out for when shopping.
Elle’s experience serves as a reminder to consumers about the complexities of discount shopping and the importance of examining price tags closely. Whether searching for high-street fashion or luxury items, understanding retail pricing strategies can lead to more informed purchasing decisions.
