Ian Dempsey Considers Return to RTÉ After 27 Years Away
Ian Dempsey, the well-known radio DJ, has hinted at the possibility of returning to RTÉ after a remarkable 27 years since his departure for Today FM. In July 1998, Dempsey made headlines by leaving the national broadcaster for the newly established independent station, which reportedly offered him a significantly higher salary.
Currently, Dempsey hosts the breakfast show on Today FM, where his popularity remains high. According to the latest JNLR figures, he attracts an impressive audience of 213,000 listeners every morning, making his show the most listened to on the station.
Reflections on a Potential Return
In a recent interview with the Irish Independent, Dempsey was asked if he would consider making a move back to RTÉ. He responded playfully, stating, “At this stage, I’m very happy doing what I’m doing, but any offer would depend on what it was. An Irish version of The Chase – let’s go!” His comments suggest a willingness to explore opportunities, albeit under specific conditions.
RTÉ has seen significant changes in its lineup recently. Veteran broadcaster Joe Duffy has announced his departure from the popular show Liveline, while Claire Byrne is set to leave her position to join Newstalk. Byrne’s transition will see her take over the midweek slot currently held by Pat Kenny, who is expected to move to weekend broadcasts in 2026.
A Long and Storied Career
Dempsey’s association with RTÉ dates back to 1980, when he began hosting The Weekend Breakfast Show on RTÉ 2FM. Aside from a brief hiatus in 1989, he has consistently entertained audiences as a breakfast DJ. Many listeners fondly remember his role on Dempsey’s Den, which aired from 1986 to 1990, introducing iconic characters like Zig and Zag to Irish television.
As the media landscape continues to evolve, the potential for Dempsey’s return to RTÉ raises intriguing questions about the future of broadcasting in Ireland. His enduring popularity and established career make him a significant figure in the industry, and any decision regarding his return would undoubtedly be met with considerable public interest.
