Michael D. Higgins Launches Poetry Album as Presidency Winds Down
President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, has released a new album of poetry titled “Against All Certainties”, marking his impending departure from the Áras an Uachtaráin. The album, which features ten original poems set to music, is available for purchase at a price of €14.99. While the motivations behind this release remain uncertain, it is yet to be clarified whether any proceeds will be donated to charitable causes.
Despite being the second richest president in Europe, with a salary of €332,070 plus living expenses, the new album’s reception is expected to be closely monitored. Critics have not shied away from expressing their opinions on Higgins’ literary contributions, particularly following the mixed reviews of his previous poetry collection, “New and Selected Poems.”
Mixed Reviews and Criticism
The earlier collection faced harsh criticism from noted literary figures. Professor Kevin Kiely, a Fulbright Scholar and Professor of Irish Literature in Idaho, delivered a particularly scathing review, describing it as “stale, lame and stilted.” His comments, published in the state-funded Arts Council magazine, suggested that Higgins’ work could be seen as “crimes against literature.” Kiely expanded on his thoughts during a segment on RTÉ Radio, expressing concern that Ireland could develop a reputation for producing subpar poetry.
Even esteemed publications like The Guardian weighed in on the debate. Reviewer Carol Rumens remarked, “Michael D is no poet,” questioning the validity of Higgins’ dual identity as a politician and poet. Despite the negative feedback from critics, there are supporters within his own party, the Labour Party, who have praised this new album.
Production and Themes
Recorded at the Áras an Uachtaráin and distributed by Claddagh Records, “Against All Certainties” aims to provide listeners with insight into the life of Higgins, from his childhood to his current role as President. The producers hope the album will offer a glimpse into the experiences that shaped the poet before he took on his political responsibilities.
While the album’s reception at this stage is uncertain, Higgins’ literary pursuits continue to spark conversations about the intersection of politics and the arts in contemporary Ireland. With his presidency concluding, many are curious to see how his final artistic endeavors will be received by the public and critics alike.
