Orlando Bloom’s Boxing Film “The Cut” Set for Streaming Release
Orlando Bloom’s boxing drama, “The Cut”, is set to make its streaming debut on Paramount+ after a successful limited theatrical release. The film, directed by Sean Ellis and featuring Irish actress Caitríona Balfe alongside John Turturro, initially premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2024. Following a limited run in cinemas last month, audiences can now experience this critically acclaimed story from the comfort of their homes.
The film centres around a character known only as The Boxer, portrayed by Bloom. The narrative unfolds ten years after a severe injury sidelined him from professional boxing. Now, he and his wife, Caitlin (played by Balfe), manage a thriving gym. However, when another boxer tragically dies before a title fight, The Boxer sees an opportunity to reclaim his place in the ring. The fight’s unscrupulous promoter quickly makes him the new contender, setting the stage for a gripping comeback.
As The Boxer intensifies his training, painful memories from his childhood resurface, complicating his journey. With just six days to shed a significant amount of weight, he enlists the help of Boz (Turturro), a notorious trainer known for his unconventional methods. The film promises an emotional exploration of resilience and redemption against the backdrop of the boxing world.
Production Insights and Heritage Connections
Ellis, recognized for his previous work on “The Cursed”, directed the film based on a script by Justin Bull, with Mark Lane credited for the story. The production team includes Bloom, Lane, Leonora Darby, James Harris, Adam Karasick, Bret Saxon, and Thomas Fanning.
Bloom’s connection to Ireland runs deep, as he shared on Ryan Tubridy’s Virgin Radio show earlier this year. He revealed that his maternal grandfather, Francis John Copeland, was born in Belfast and later moved to Kolkata, India, where he worked as a doctor. Bloom expressed pride in his Irish heritage, stating, “You know my grandfather was from Ireland. I’m getting my Irish passport.” He noted that while pursuing an Irish passport facilitates work opportunities within the EU, his motivation is also rooted in a personal connection to his ancestry.
As audiences eagerly await the streaming release of “The Cut”, the film offers a blend of sport, personal struggle, and cultural identity, making it a must-watch for fans of both boxing and compelling storytelling.
