Patrick Kielty Supports Jimmy Kimmel Amid Suspension Controversy

On September 19, 2023, Patrick Kielty extended a message of solidarity to fellow talk show host Jimmy Kimmel during an episode of his own program, The Late Late Show. Kimmel’s show has been suspended indefinitely following his comments regarding the alleged shooter involved in the death of right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk.
During the broadcast from Dublin, Ireland, Kielty expressed his support for Kimmel, inviting him to visit if he needed a place to continue his work. Kielty’s remarks came as Kimmel faced backlash for suggesting that supporters of former President Donald Trump were attempting to manipulate the narrative surrounding the tragedy.
Kielty’s Message of Free Speech
Kielty addressed Kimmel directly, saying, “Hey Jimmy, it’s Patrick Kielty saying a big hello from Studio 4 of RTÉ here in Dublin, Ireland, home to The Late Late Show for over 60 years.” He referenced the historical challenges faced by the show, stating, “During that time, there have, of course, been many in power who wanted our show off air — and yet, our bosses have never considered shutting us down.” This statement served as a reassurance of the importance of free speech in the media.
He continued, emphasizing Kimmel’s welcome in Ireland: “So, if you ever need a studio, or a desk, or an audience, or a band, we’re here for you.” The warm invitation was well-received by audiences, who applauded Kielty’s candid approach. He humorously pointed out that since Trump has no authority over RTÉ, Kimmel could express himself freely. “And most importantly of all, Jimmy, this is Ireland. So we can promise that you can say whatever the f**k you want,” Kielty added, prompting enthusiastic applause from the studio audience.
Context of Kimmel’s Suspension
Kimmel’s show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, was suspended following comments made by the host about the investigation into Kirk’s death. He criticized the “MAGA gang” for attempting to depict the alleged shooter, Tyler Robinson, as separate from their group, suggesting they were exploiting the incident for political gain.
This controversy escalated when Brendan Carr, chairman of the FCC, expressed his discontent with Kimmel’s remarks. Carr suggested that networks should take a stand against Kimmel until the situation was resolved. In a statement, he remarked, “I think that it’s really sort of past time that a lot of these licensed broadcasters themselves push back on Comcast and Disney.” Following this statement, Trump also commented on the suspension, praising the decision on his platform, Truth Social. He stated, “Great News for America: The ratings challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED,” although it should be noted that the show has not been officially cancelled.
In a media landscape often fraught with political tension, Kielty’s invitation to Kimmel highlights the ongoing debate over free speech in entertainment. The support from Kielty serves as a reminder of the camaraderie that can exist among talk show hosts, regardless of the political climate.
