Shanagolden’s Beloved Christmas Lights Display Pauses for 2025

The cherished Christmas lights display in Shanagolden will not operate this year due to personal circumstances, as confirmed by the Hayes family. Known for its vibrant decorations and community fundraising, the annual event has become a significant part of the local festive season.
The announcement came via a social media post, where Cormac Hayes stated, “We wanted to let you know that, due to personal circumstances, the Hayes Christmas Lights display will not be going ahead this year again. While we know this has become a cherished part of the festive season for many, we believe it’s the right decision for us this year.”
Despite the disappointment, the family expressed hopes to return with an even more expansive display for Christmas 2026. They added, “We appreciate your understanding and continued support, and we can’t wait to celebrate with you all again soon. Wishing everyone a joyful and peaceful holiday season ahead.”
History of the Hayes Christmas Lights Display
The Hayes Christmas Lights display first illuminated Shanagolden in 1997, when Cormac’s mother, Mary, purchased a light-up Santa and Snowman. Initially met with skepticism from his father, Timmy, who believed such decorations were only seen in America, the tradition blossomed. Timmy eventually joined in the festive spirit, purchasing lights the following year.
The display continued annually until December 23, 2003, when Timmy passed away. Following his death, the lights were dimmed completely by 2005. In a heartfelt revival, Cormac brought the display back to life in 2017. Since then, he has raised nearly €100,000 for various local charities, underscoring the community impact of the event.
Each year, Cormac dedicates over eight weeks to setting up the elaborate display. Visitors typically enjoy a whimsical array of decorations, including Santa, reindeer, snowmen, and characters like Mickey and Minnie Mouse, alongside more unique figures like seven-foot giraffes and polar bears.
Community Impact and Future Plans
The absence of the lights this year marks another pause in a beloved tradition that has brought joy to countless families and raised funds for local causes. The community’s response reflects the significance of this event, which has become a symbol of holiday spirit in Shanagolden.
Looking ahead, the Hayes family remains optimistic about the future of the display. Their commitment to returning “bigger and brighter” for Christmas 2026 signals a hopeful continuation of a tradition that has brought light to the holiday season for so many. In the meantime, the Hayes family extends their gratitude for the understanding and support from the community, ensuring that the spirit of the holidays endures even in their absence this year.
